The murder of Dr Leroy Adams, who was shot in his Florida office in August 1952. Ruby McCollum testified that the medic had forced her to have sex and bear his child. She was convicted of the crime by an all-white jury, before the verdict was overturned on the grounds she was mentally incompetent to stand trial. She was then held in a state mental hospital until her release in 1974

He was abducted from his school and shortly afterwards shot dead by drug-addicted alcoholics Carl Hall and Bonnie Heady, who issued a ransom for $600,000 after the murder had been carried out. Though the pair were readily caught, much of the money was never recovered
