Dr. Sam Ryan is called to the scene of the tragic death of a six-year-old girl, Sarah Crew, who is thought to have fallen from a rope-swing over a river and drowned and the police surgeon has called in the pathologist. Sam has to work out if her death was an accident or murder.

A police officer is also found dead, the conclusion is that he killed the man and then committed suicide. Sam thinks that they are both murders and tries to solve the case by finding the real perpetrator of the murders.
