When Toby appears to be suffering from depression, Wendy suggests that John doesn't see him for a few weeks. John's distraught at first, but determines to find out what's wrong.

Ken's and Maggie's marriage is under pressure, and Ken invites John round for tea, hoping that his presence will at least placate his wife, if not remind her of the 'good old times'. Unfortunately, it only seems to make matters worse.

After a chance meeting with an old friend whilst away with John, Liz is trying to work out what and who she wants. He's left waiting by the phone at home for her decision - as is Kirk, distraught that Kate hasn't called him from Greece. Ken, meanwhile, is having a vasectomy for Maggie!

When an attractive young woman approaches John in a bar, he thinks all of his Christmasses have come at once - moreso when he learns he's been successful in applying to become headmaster of his school. Unfortunately, things don't run as smoothly as hoped.

It's John's first Christmas as a divorced man, and he's not looking forward to spending it alone. Meanwhile, eyebrows are raised at the club when Kirk disappears, and Ralph's having some problems with a biker gang. Then, when Mike breaks his leg, John's Christmas begins to look up...
