Au fil des années, les engins se perfectionnent, jusqu'à l'apparition, en 1900, du premier dirigeable à enveloppe rigide. Les appareils gagnent en taille et en vitesse, assurant le transport de passagers ou des tâches militaires. Cependant, gonflés à l'hydrogène, les dirigeables s'avèrent dangereux. Alors qu'ils sont concurrencés par les avions, l'accident du «Hindenburg», en 1937, marque le début de la fin pour ces géants des airs. Depuis, l'hélium, inerte, a remplacé l'hydrogène.
