One day during the summer vacation, Kakeru saves a weakening blue pony on his way to visit his father. This creature is actually a mystery animal called a "thunder beast." A mysterious group abducts Kakeru's father, so Kakeru and Blink set out on a journey to find him. Then they see a girl surrounded by people in "Gray Town," and save her. Her name is Nelly and her father is a rich farmer who is selling expensive meat to the people in the town. Kakeru and Blink save the injured Prince Sharaku. Then the prince tells them that he has experienced a narrow escape from Rose Mansion after failing a quiz there. Kakeru's journey to find his father continues. They arrive at Yellow Town, which is governed by Princess Kirara's uncle. Once a beautiful country, it now lays completely in ruins. Kakeru learns from the townspeople that his father has been taken to Yellow Fortress. When Kakeru arrives at the fortress, its owner, the Duke of Yellow Stone, promises to give his father back if Kakeru kills the monster Dogizura that lives on the ground that was once a mine. Kakeru's party runs into a pretty girl named Poron. She is on her way to get a "life-saving mushroom" from the Sepia forest in order to cure her mother's disease. Kakeru's party arrives at Pearl Muu bus stop on the beach. According to legend, there was an island called Pearl Muu here long ago. The island sank into the sea because of a big earthquake, but people on the island built a submarine city and still live there. Suddenly a tiger comes onto the bus and everyone panics. Then Black, the leader of Black Circus, appears. He has the power to handle animals easily. The tiger is part of the circus. A strange butterfly flies into the bus. It is a "Hotaru" butterfly, depicted in Haruhiko's books for children. Kakeru and Blink follow the butterfly to get a clue as to his father's whereabouts, but end up in a strange place. A mysterious black knight kidnaps Princess Kirara. Kakeru and the others follow them and arrive at an old castle. There is only a wall painting of Don Quixote inside the castle. Kakeru and the others help a detective called Frisbee. He tells Kakeru that his father will appear in a place called "Orange Stone." However, Frisbee is an impersonator manipulated by Emperor Gross's men. He impersonates Kakeru's fellows in Orange Stone and creates friction among them by abusing everyone. Emperor Gross is actually Kakeru's father Haruhiko. Gross was born from Haruhiko's evil mind. Kakeru becomes upset and very depressed. His friends tell him to consider his father's feelings, and leave on a bus. The journey to look for his father ends. This also means the end of their adventures, and time to say goodbye to Blink.
