S1 E1 • Behind The Picket Fence

The Shannons may seem like a typical family, but beneath the surface, Joan and David lead a secret life. Stefanie, a young vivacious 16 year old meets Craig, a handsome older counselor at summer camp -they fall quickly in love and get married seven years later. It seems Stefanie's life is perfect, a charming husband, job at a top Philadelphia law firm and a great house on the city's glitzy Main Line. Howbeit, Craig has quite the wandering eye. He begins spending his days at a brothel with women that fulfill his every sexual desire. Eventually the police catch on, but Craig is given immunity if he agrees to testify. He reveals every sordid detail in court. Stefanie never finds out. Craig's dalliances however, aren't over and he starts spending his days at a high-end strip club where he falls for a beautiful blond dancer Summer. Craig's debt snowballs fast as he spends thousands on private lap-dances and gifts for Summer. He turns to ponzi schemes and Stefanie's paycheck but it isn't enough … he'll stop at nothing to be with Summer. The night of April 29th 1997, days before their daughters 1st birthday Craig makes a frantic 911 call. He's found his wife unconscious in the tub. Stefanie is pronounced dead — determined an accidental drowning. While friends and family comfort Craig, a suspicious coroner pushes for an autopsy. The investigation reveals Stephanie died from strangulation not drowning — within hours the police uncover more incriminating evidence. In Craig's attic they find receipts chronicling all of Craig's relationship with Summer. In court the details of Stefanie's final moments come out. After slipping Stefanie a sleeping pill, Craig placed her in the tub and callously strangled his wife.

Renee Poole has married her high school sweetheart Brent and moved to a suburb of Winston-Salem, North Carolina where they are a young family settling into their own home. Brent Poole shows much promise in his career as a highly trained mechanic and provides a comfortable life for his wife and young daughter. Renee, however, tires quickly of the routine of being a stay home mom and house wife. She craves adventure and attention, so when a friend offers her a chance to dance at the local gentleman's club she jumps on the opportunity. Renee's new place of employment offers her more than just money — she acquires a number of lovers who she brings home while Brent is hard at work supporting the family. One of these lovers becomes a little something more. This relationship ends in tragedy when Brent finds out and asks Renee to stop her relations with this other man.

The investigation uncovers a lust-fuelled affair, a cold-blooded murder and someone isn't who they seem.
