Ben journeys to the Ozark National Forest in Arkansas, to live with master craftsman Robert, learning why this 70-year-old former medical student ditched his education for America's counterculture 20 years ago, bought 200 acres of land deep in the woods, and raised a family of six children. Ben sees how far-reaching Robert's skills are, including cabin-making techniques dating back to the 13th century, and how his family have supported him in his dream.

Norway In the Arctic Circle, the explorer meets Randi, the first Norwegian woman to climb Everest ahead of his own bid to scale the world's highest mountain. He embraces the tough and basic life on her 8.5 acre island by sleeping outdoors, and collecting raw building materials. Ben also experiences sea kayaking, and witnesses the northern lights.

S7 E5 • Bulgaria

“Nomad” has become a travel cliché in recent years, but Miriam and Peter are the real deal. In Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains, which at times resemble a South American rainforest, Mr Fogle joins the couple, whose lives are one huge hike through the wilderness. Their sole possessions on their backs, they forage and bow-hunt for food. Highlights include Ben’s face when he’s asked to wash his hair in his own pee. “I don’t think it’ll catch on in the Fogle household,” he winces. There’s something hyper-real about these two “refugees from modern life”. She should audition for the next Tomb Raider movie, while he’d make a mean Gandalf.

Ben journeys to Ireland's rugged Atlantic coastline in the bleak midwinter. He stays with Judith, an 80-year-old who rejected a modern way of life for one closer to nature. Ben learns how she and her late husband created a unique utopia and discovers how - even at an advanced age - she is determined to remain alone in the wild. Ben joins his maverick host in her solitary cottage nestled in the hillside, a treasure trove of art and books she has called home for 40 years. Shunning the modern world, Judith lives by candle-light, drinks water from a well and uses a spinning wheel.

S7 E8 • Brazil

Ben Fogle travels to Brazil to meet Chris, a Scotsman who has chosen to make his home in one of the most remote areas of the jungle near the Amazon river. Ben discovers how Chris's love affair with the rainforest began when he had a near-death experience, and how he fought for almost three decades to protect this part of the world. Ben also has an encounter with a tarantula, and gets stuck into a battle against termites in the heat and humidity. The duo also go hunting for wild pig and fishing for piranha.
