I know this is quite limited for a critic but it is actually hard to say something about The Place Beyond The Pines without disclosing elements which make the movie enjoyable. The less you know, the better it is.

Yet, because I am here to write about this movie I will do it without spoiling it (guaranteed). So The Place Beyond The Pines is surprising – especially if you expect something based on the trailer.

The main topic is the strength of relationships and feelings between the characters. Especially the strength of the family links despite numerous difficulties to overcome. However Derek Cianfrance and his scenarist tell a story which is more complex than the relationship aspects only. For instance, the theme of the Hero is present all the movie and this brings a 2nd view on every significant scene.

The actors are clearly good. Ray Liotta proves another time that he is underrated in the industry today. Ryan Gosling confirms his maestria for playing deranged characters. What about Eva Mendes and Bradley Cooper? They demonstrate that they are not only two beautiful people but they can also become some random one. Unbelievable.

Talking about the actors – without revealing too much – their physical evolution is disturbing. Another critical point is the lengthy passages. The Place Beyond The Pines can also be considered as a bit naïve, but I am ok to watch naïve movies like this one every day!

So The Place Beyond The Pines by Derek Cianfrance is very hard to comment but give me some trust and go watch it. It is not only a calm movie. You will be thrilled as everybody.
