First, unlike most Ethiopian music of various traditional and contemporary genres, Mulatu doesn’t use vocals. He’s unique in his instrumentality, and his mix of styles was crucial. There is a clear ’70s funk influence at play—with the wah wah on “Munaye,” the driving tempo paired with rolling saxophone on “Chifara,” the floating flute on “Mascaram Setaba.” Afro-Cuban rhythms also appear on “Mulatu” and “Kasalefkut-Hulu.” And those familiar with the Ethiopian washint (flute) will recognize the different wind sounds on “Kulumanqueleshi.” It all joins the melancholic minor rhythm and handclaps, which are reminiscent of traditional Ethiopian Orthodox church music. " Née de l’idée de rassembler sur un même album un artiste ou un groupe contemporain et un artiste faisant partie de leurs principales influences, la série «Inspiration Information» du label Strut Records a déjà initié deux heureuses réunions, celle d’Amp Fiddler et du duo jamaïcain Sly&Robbie, et celle du DJ londonien Ashley Beedle et d’Horace Andy. Ce troisième volet de la série est encore le résultat d’une bien belle rencontre à l’occasion d’un concert à Londres: celle du légendaire éthiopien Mulatu Astatke, connu notamment pour sa magistrale contribution à la collection «Ethiopiques» du label Buda Musique, et le crew The Heliocentrics mené par Malcolm Catto (batteur de DJ Shadow et Madlib), et signé sur la branche de Stones Throw Now Again. On devine aisément ce que la collaboration de ces musiciens dans l’âme peut donner au regard des influences de ces derniers, jazz et musique traditionnelle éthiopienne pour Mulatu, funk, afrobeat et électro pour les anglais d’Heliocentrics…

" Souvent remarqué sur les compilations Ethiopiques – notamment auprès du chanteur Tlahoun Gèssèssè –, le pianiste et vibraphoniste Mulatu Astatke se voit aujourd’hui consacré par une nouvelle rétrospective des enregistrements qu’il réalisa entre 1965 et 1975. Jeune Ethiopien envoyé à l’école en Angleterre, Astatke connut le Swinging London, avant que son intérêt pour le jazz et la musique latine ne le mène jusqu’aux Etats-Unis, où il intégrera le Berklee College of Music de Boston. Le temps d’enregistrer à la tête de son propre quartet, et voici Astatke reparti à Addis-Abeba, où il poursuivra ses expériences musicales.

En vingt titres choisis, New York- Addis-London suit le musicien le long d’un périple qui lui a fait mélanger musique traditionnelle éthiopienne, jazz et musique portoricaine, le tout bientôt labellisé “éthio-jazz”. Parmi les perles enfilées ici : Lantchi Biye, chanson d’amour entêtante portée par la voix de Gèssèssè, Fikratchin et sa complainte languide servie cette fois par Menelik Wossenatchew, ou encore Yegelle Tezeta, titre incontournable depuis que Jim Jarmusch en a fait la pièce maîtresse de la bandeson de Broken Flowers. Trois titres qui rappellent à eux seuls qu’aux sources de l’éthio-jazz, on trouve Mulatu Astatke. "
