S1 E1 • Curse
A man has suddenly awoken in the middle of a snow-covered land, chased by an insect-like monster of some sort. It chases after him but he is saved by a young woman with animal ears and a tail, who introduces herself as Kuon. He has no memory of anything, not even of his own name. After a gruelling journey through the forests and mountains they reach a small village, where Kuon gives him the name Haku, after a figure of legend. After recuperating from his injuries, Haku is made to do menial work at the village in order to earn his keep, but he is singularly unsuitable for this as he is physically weak. He appears to have a clever mind however and manages to repair the village's mill, whose waterwheel had long been broken. He meets Ukon, who appears to be an important person in the village.

S1 E2 • The Righteous Man
Kuon receives payment for her services to the village, and Haku shows that he has a head for maths, being able to do mental arithmetic on fairly large numbers easily. A group of men has been injured after encountering some creatures called gigiri, and Kuon treats them with her herbs. Ukon decides to go out with some village warriors to hunt these gigiri, and asks Kuon to join, as they may have need of her healing skills. She agrees on the condition that Haku join as well. As before Haku is quickly exhausted by the trek up the mountains and meets a court scholar riding in their cart named Maroro. Haku learns from Maroro that the gigiri are sort of like the insect-like monster he encountered previously. They lay a trap of rotting meat and a large number of the gigiri are drawn to it, and Maroro casts a magical spell that sends fire that kills many of them, while Ukon and the rest of the village warriors finish off the rest. A much larger gigiri, called a boro-gigiri appears, evidently the same sort of creature that Haku encountered before, and it manages to kill a few of the village warriors even as more gigiri appear. Kuon gives Haku a metal fan that he is able to use as a weapon, while Ukon orders the rest of the warriors to retreat while he, Kuon, and Haku execute a plan to use the same cursed slime (tatari) in the cavern to consume this boro-gigiri the way it did the other one previously.

S1 E3 • The Road to the Capital
Ukon asks Kuon and Haku to accompany him as he escorts Rurutie, the youngest princess of Kujuuri to the capital. Along the road they see a young woman with a broken cart who asks for their help, but turns out to be a ruse by a gang of brigands to distract them. They take all of the cargo intended as gifts for the Emperor. All this however was actually part of Ukon's plan to find the brigands' secret hideout and capture them, and had a group of warriors had hidden themselves amongst the cargo. He goes to attack the brigands when the location of their hideout is known, leaving Kuon and Haku behind to protect Rurutie and Maroro. As the hideout is about to be overwhelmed by Ukon and his warriors, the leader of the brigands tries to escape via a secret passage he prepared for that purpose, and he emerges where Haku and the others are waiting. He tries to take Rurutie hostage but is attacked by her bird, just as a company of imperial soldiers arrives to arrest him and his cohorts. The imperial soldiers are led by a masked man named Oshutoru. They eventually arrive at the capital.

Haku, Kuon, and Ukon eventually arrive safely at the capital with Rurutie and take lodging at an inn named Hakuroukaku. They meet Ukon's little sister Nekone, and try the baths for which the inn is famous. The next day Haku and Kuon are shown around the city by Rurutie, and Nekone tags along, as she is suspicious of Haku and wants to know more about him, as her brother seems to trust him. The town is very lively, and they see Oshutoru conducting an inspection. Kuon tries to find Haku another job, and while he makes mistakes on the job people still seem to like him. They return to the inn and Haku receives a letter, which exposes the fact that he cannot read present-day writing. It is an invitation from Ukon to meet, but instead of Ukon they see Oshutoru, who wishes to become Haku's patron. He removes his mask and they find that Oshutoru and Ukon are the same person.
