Synopsis : Manta est, malgré sa petite taille, un brillant étudiant au lycée de Tokyo. Un jour, alors qu'il rentre tard de ses cours du soir, il coupe par le cimetière pour gagner du temps. C'est là qu'il rencontre Yoh Asakura, héritier d'une famille de shamans, faisant la fête avec les fantômes des morts enterrés dans ce cimetière. Paralysé de peur, Manta s'enfuit, mais il revoit Yoh le lendemain, dans son lycée. Celui-ci lui apprend qu'il est venue à Tokyo dans le but de participer au Shaman Fight, une compétition permettant de désigner le Shaman King. Pour cela, Yoh tente de convaincre un maximum d'esprits de l'accompagner, mais celui qui l'intéresse le plus est Amidamaru, le fantôme d'un samouraï exécuté sur la colline il y a plus de 600 ans.
