NOT A REVIEW (and not a Superman either)
- From the first minutes, EVERYTHING looks fake. (as in "vidéo game with filmed footage patched on it" fake)
- Action scenes relying on CGI human skeleton/figures don't look good (and probably never will, no matter how much computer graphics progress).
- Most scenes and every action scene (and shot) stay up for too long.
- The film jumping from moments to moments with little cohesion prevents possible involvement and more importantly from telling things decently (example: Clark working/Clark's past/Clark travelling/Clark past/Clark visiting the thing we're expected to know is the Fortress of Solitude, with some scenes for other characters interspacing them),
- yet there's no attempt at shortening anything about this subculture myth of Superman that was imprinted into popular culture. (Snyder even bets on reusing the same personal ennemy than the first cinema adaptation.)
- Everything is played straight, terribly straight but without any charm or reason for the viewer to respond to characters or event
- Even the dismally ridiculous scene of Jonathan Kent (a scene making some sense) that plays like it tries to inspire serious emotions as if it was unaware of its own stupidity (I was baffled, my parents were laughing).
- Add to this "magical resolutions" (the Jor-El hologram for example)
...
- (Relatively) Big (and mostly "finished") actors ending up here is a shame for them (notably Costner being good but doing mere act of presence),
- but Michael Shannon's inability to offer more than his ugly faces
- Russel Crowe's lack of presence (even compared to a simple Brando 2D face)
Amy Adams & Henry Cavill either acting badly or following bad instructions are the worst aspect of how this thing spoils its cast.
Finally, out of all the slim characters in there, are the main ones, (beginner)Superman or Clark even characters? I doubt it, despite the attempt to deliver a potentially interesting version of them (although this Superman is totally alien to the basic fundamentals of Superman).
Nice idea to offer a new design to Krypton though (no matter what my appreciation of it is).
I won't talk about the constant colouration, it always annoys me so I can't judge how good it is that the film shows great dedication to its ugly palette.
Note: I don't remember it happening in the french dub but the english copy I watched this time had extreme sound volume oscillations (particularly on human voices).
Score: 3,5/10 (-1)
Plaisir: 2/5
All in all, this made lots of noises and little sense. Oh, wait... (Did
he enter the sound mixing room too?)
