Version française revue sur ARTE, soirée Jodie Foster.
A period drama that fails to be the mystery it believes it is in its first hour, delivers an average court intrigue and ultimately appears to be far more interested in melodrama.
Shorter than the original french film while retaining the two main chunks of the story, the american remake manages to feel too long anyway thanks to a strong lack of substance. What remains is a collection of paintings of the old american country.
Richard Gere is as likable as ever but nothing more while Foster is as good as she always is (even during her lackluster 90s "mainstream" run).
Score: 4/10
Enjoyment: 3/5
"Classy" entertainment fodder.
Rewatching this makes me wonder if the french film penned by Jean-Claude Carrière is any better (maybe actual themes are developed through the story?).
PS: hearing the actress for 90mn in french after getting used to hear her play in english was weird.
