Restauration vue sur OK.
A film with a viewpoint perfectly used to treat its subject. From the beginning, the Stepfather tells his story, with the stepdaughter in crisis (a mixture of mourning and exploding hormones) accordingly played to be part herself and part reflection of him.
Patrick Dewaere plays the looser as well as usual while the fresh young actress maintains a flat tone suiting the semi-fantasy (and looks the age, rather than looking like a model). The dialogues might push believability at times but stay within the acceptable for an unreliable tale and are allowed a few absurdities à la Blier to amuse the audience.
The music gives to the story the melodramatic touch the hero seeks.
The threatening final shot, useful only for an inattentive audience in appearance, is an excellent conclusion that reinforces the overall impression left by what preceded.
