Vu sur France Télévision, Cannes !
Director's Fortnight (in comp. Caméra d'Or), Cannes 2013
Seemingly revisited by a bunch of friends (helped by french indy cinema benefactor Vincent Macaigne), mesdames et messieurs... the good old times of french comedy with a touch of Godard and other big names !
Wait, those old times were never good to begin with !
« L'univers n'est que le raffistolage d'un gros sac de merde. »
The whole world is nothing but makeshift repairs on a sack of shit.
This very cheap comedy and very proud of it delivers salvos of ideas and gags per scene, wich could explain the revolution it was claimed to be back at Cannes 2013 ("a young french cinema not dead yet !" said Les Cahiers). Punctuated by several (cute) inserts, this frenzy still ends up looking pretty futile.
Pons might be considered good as a lovely idiot but Macaigne shines too much* in this kind of role for her to stand out. The other actors are not worth talking about, except maybe the crazy tireless Delorean driving "doctor" Placenta.
But all of this is at the service of a nonsensical mixed bag of jokes.
(I still have to figure out the reason behind the recurrence of History and economy. Maybe it has to do with the love of La Fille du 14 Juillet for older times, symbolized by the pop culture iconic car?)
Score: 5/10
Enjoyment: 2~3/5
I'm amazed this made so much noise back then. At least, it manages to not be as exasperating as those 70s/80s popular comedies like Pecas, Mocky or even Zidi's movies, etc.
- Not that I understand how he got the "Best upcoming actor" at the Césars for his role here.
