First time seeing the complete film (France missing around 10mn).
Revu en Fuori Orario (1e fois en version complète).
Well directed for its suspense and evocative style, with Argento's good eye for visuals that will offer a few memorable pictures, but ultimately a very silly affair one has to accept to swallow: we face in fact a piece of insects-lead detective work.
Indeed, while we don't expect a perfectly rounded story from Argento, here it reaches such a silly point you can't not notice it despite everything else embellishing the experience. Even the more peculiar element isn't that well exploited and turned silly or used for a joke at times. Meanwhile, the movie wanders and the intrigue takes turns suddenly, unexpected ones because they come out of nowhere nor are possible hints actually hinting at anything.
Some scenes have diminished returns because of the music placement, at least at first, but once the audience grows accustomed to the disconnect, it "works" (probably in a less effective way than some atmosphere-building track would, I admit). The soundtrack, often an highlight in Argento's work, is such a big part of the film it gets the first credits of the ending.
Most of the acting is poor (notably, Beauchau's attack), aside from the young Connelly and Pleasance (dropping his outrageous style of that time) doing okay. To cite someone, "it's telling when the chimp acts far better than most of its colleagues." And what's decent is often damaged by the awful italian/english (pick yours) dubbing, the cries/shouts placed haphazardly for example. At least, Connelly and Pleasance still have their distinctive voices to recite lines devoid of interest.
And yes, young (not bony) Connelly looks incredible, her appearance lending itself perfectly to the dream-like scenes of Phenomena.
Score: 6~7,5/10 depending on how tolerant you are. (+1))
Enjoyment: 5/5
Form and nothing else, as always with the maestro of giallo. With two big contenders (OST and story development) to scare the audience away.
White gown Connelly, scissors, murders, manor, bad little kid, weird music... I want to play Clock Tower now.
PS: "bad moral" blabla, yeah... of course.
