An okay crime intrigue (but you rarely expect much from such comic books in that department). As a first half, it's a bit too long of a build-up. Starting light enough with some appreciable banter, it sadly never drops it once entering darker territories (I doubt the comicbook I've read only a few pages of kept the jokes going for its whole run). And it doesn't even exploit its release form (disc-only) to abandon itself to violence: you'll never see a bullet hole for example.
Also, despite being set as a rather early story, it's reliant on the audience's basic knowledges of "Batman" (unsurprising from an OAV geared towards an acquired market).
Still as mild technically as every other title that came before, it doesn't even try to set for a slight (simplified) mimicking of the original book's visual style but goes instead for its own one, different enough from what we have grown accustomed to, a nice move even though it's not impressive at all.
Not sure promoting Ackles (Smalville, Supernatural) to Batman was a good thing although he does fine enough. But it's mainly a problem of too much guest-starring in those DVD movies, rather than hiring actual voice comedians for the main roles.
