(Film review in English)

This movie is directed by the American duo of film directors, producers and writers Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert also known as “the Daniels”.

“Everything Everywhere all at Once” is their second feature film together and in it they tell the story of Evelyn, a Chinese mother, who’s stuck in her everyday life. One day she discovers the multiverse exists, as well as different versions of herself and her family.

The story is divided into 3 parts : “Everything” tells the story of Evelyn. ”Everywhere” tells the story of her and her family in the multiverse. “All at Once” tells how she is able to live in peace with this knowledge and her family.

Cinephiles will be pleased to recognise a lot of references to other movies like “Matrix”, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, “In the Mood for Love” or even “Henri-Georges Clouzot's Inferno”.

Also, fans of action and martial art movies will relish in the fact that it is the great actress Michelle Yeoh, considered to be “the queen of Asian Action film” since the 80’s, who plays the main protagonist, Evelyn, at almost 60 years old.

The movie’s strength is that it doesn't take itself seriously. Some sequences flirt with “nonsense” and make people laugh.

The aesthetic of the movie is incredible and must be seen on a big screen. The quality of the special effects increases entertainment. The stage setting (mise en scene) as well as the editing are really inventive in some scenes,

Unlike the form, which is consistently eye-catching, the content is more ordinary. The Daniels speak about serious main topics in life, such as couple crisis, intergenerational love, mother-daughter relationship and even the meaning of life… All of this is captured with a lot of visual and sound effects and at times seems to be a big mess but maybe it’s because it reflects the way Evelyn feels about her life.

Despite its length (two hours and twenty minutes!) and a few chaotic sequences, “Everything Everywhere all at once” is a very creative film that is definitely worth seeing in a movie theatre.
