Introduced as a tragedy by a narrator, this film set during the last moments of an uprising first presents the doomed resistants as they are about to be trampled by the german army and are resolute to die, giving us half an hour with them, before sending them down in an hellish journey through the sewers (Kanal) in a desperate attempt to flee during wich we see those dead men on leave increasingly eager to live. This suffocating travel through the underworld is the highlight of the film, greatly served by a play of light and shade reinforcing its infernal nature but devoid of the constant musical underlining that usually comes along.
