«Arrêtez de m'appeler Jean-Luc Godard, le Jean-Luc Godard dont vous parlez ce n'est pas moi. Moi je ne suis qu'un acteur qui essaye de jouer le rôle de Jean-Luc Godard... et un acteur même pas super terrible, en plus.»
― L.Garrel playing J-L.Godard
What should save this competently made movie (by Hazanavicius, of The Artist fame) from Godard devouts is how fun it is thanks to being a comedic* catalogue of Godard's techniques/mannerisms (too much of a catalogue, actually) and of references. Often uncalled for, those "misplaced" elements enhance the weird comedy at work.
Louis Garrel as Godard only works because of the quasi-parodic tone of this pastiche (although his way to talk with a fake lipse was annoying as hell to me), something he fully adheres to. In the same way, you will come to forgive the often naked Stacy Martin to never bare a passing ressemblance to Wiazemsky (evoking instead other actresses).
I've read that the comedy itself is too flat: in this case, the film loses its main interest.
Of note, it's sufficiently focused on the wife's look at her husband during a transitional phase to avoid being called a "bad Godard biopic", despite a few awkward jumps into Godard's mind. Actually, it should be seen as a Hazanavicius' last comedic Great Reinterpretation of Wiazemsky's memories tainted by bits of his own experience/distaste more than anything else.
Score: 6,5/10
Enjoyment: 4/5
Sadly, the people who should get the most out of this playful movie are the ones who will bury it for not being a plain biography of their favourite author.
*The film being a comedy might be a play on the fact it happens around Godard's transition (giving up light films).
=======================
J'aurais dû éteindre lorsque le nom du réalisateur est apparu...
Quand même sympa, cette comédie catalogue d'idées de Godard, même si cela ressemblait souvent à une excuse pour coller Stacy Martin à poil.
