"I thought you were dead" — Everyone in this movie
A western with Lee van Cleef as a guest, with a cheap but effective post-apocalyptic atmosphere (the designs, the music, etc), and discret worldbuilding*. Thin characters well played by Harry Dean Stanton & co. and the iconic incarnation of "80s cool" Snake Plissken. The film never takes itself seriously nor is too campy but Carpenter manages to insert his usual jabs at his country and time, as obvious as ever.
But it's an action film, not Carpenter's forte (despite some ideas), and beyond the simple yet appealing concept it never really looks like something more than a random midnight walk for his hero that threatens to go for too long, a fun walk nonetheless.
No need to mention Carpenter's synth score, by now?
Score: 6,5/10 (+0,5)
Enjoyment: 4/5 (+2)
(As a child, I found it deadly boring, maybe because of my contempt for western movies.)
