Tokio-Ghoul Re is the third saison of Tokio Ghoul. To be honest it was not needed. Saison 2 finished well and was satisfactory. Tokio Ghoul is a good anime and I'd advise people to go for seasons 1 & 2. No problem to stop there, they are self sufficiant. It was indeed possible to make more seasons and to push even more than season 3 if it was well done.
It is not the case.
You can see it if you have nothing else to see and are curious. You'll be most likely disapointed. It isn't a total failure, there a few good things but it is not interresting.
My problem with saison3 is that it isn't realistic, it isn't consistant with the world building of the previous seasons, it is also messy/confusing and new concepts/ideas/characters/story arc are not well put. Also characters just change behavior in random way. It is like even if they are from the previous season they are just different characters. Could work for 1 or 2. the hero even maybe. But for so many. That's stupid.
To be concrete:
- that characters that were suposedly dead (quite a few) just come back from death. Not realitic, not interresting, not convincing. Why most many characters gouls or human really die forever and why some just come back. Oh we understand why. But this is poor. It doesn't fit unto the world and is unecessary.
- that we introduce many new characters, clan and politics too fast without building a real background and explaining. Its make the story inclear.
- the new characters are empty an inconsistant. A character that hate everybody and is an arrivist change for no reason to be a romantic and care for everybody. And they are all doing stupid things like that.
- that most people will be on the same side near the end and nobody care finally that they killed each other before for 3 saisons.
- The idea that the hero changed side again because he lost memory is not bad but it look like season 2 again where he already changed sides. It so un-interessing and too easy.
- the final problem where the hero transform in a huge dragon that destroy everything has no explanation, no justification in the world building and is just that... pushed to us. It look like we don't have something consistant anymore but that the scenarists just put whatever.
- In the last seasons it isn't like the world doesn't exist anymore. No standard humans, no standard Ghouls. There only the characters of the serie. The not even really a government in Japan anymore or a world (nobody care what CCG or ghouls do in Tokio and they are all by themselve.)
- The ultimate vilain is just disapointing. He act for no reason, he as no objective, he has no strategy and is stupid.
What was ok but not necessily great:
- The idea that new gouls are created like the hero make sense. I mean exising human morphed into Ghouls. It was present in season 1 but an accident. That it is more general issue is ok.
- The complotist plot of CCG was not interresting or great, but was OK. It was not a strength but acceptable. The way it was put in practice was terrible and un-acceptable
- The idea that finally Ghouls & Humans unite is ok too. But it shall not be all humans and all Ghouls.
