Straight, simple trajectory of an impoverished retired "honest citizen", devoid of the melodrama that can tarnish neorealism at times. Great look.
Restauration vue sur France 5, Cinéma de minuit, "Films italiens rares".
Despite touches of comedy and the presence of a loving maid, the inevitability grows stronger until the powerless hero finally accepts it (through a nice high-angle shot) and goes on a new quest the audience knows the meaning of. It's then that the film really strikes hard, in its final fifteen minutes or so.
One might accuse it of being slow and having a rather empty middle section filled by repetition, even though it is a rather short film. But it seems so because there's no real story / intrigue, the film going fully into a realistic direction by simply depicting the life of Umberto D.
For an old teacher, the main actor plays very well his part.
Score: 8,5/10
Enjoyment: 4/5
Excellent even if you don't share the sentimentality it displays at times.
